The Unbuckle Me Car Seat Tool is a lightweight, easy to use tool that allows users to easily push the button to release children's car seat belts. Designed by an Occupational Therapist with CMC joint arthritis, who became frustrated when she could not unbuckle her granddaughter from the car seat.

The Unbuckle Me car seat buckle release aid uses a type II lever to reduce the force required to unbuckle by more than 50% (Note: this has been tested and confirmed). Leverage is critical to creating a mechanical advantage, and thereby lowering the amount of force needed to unbuckle. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) require infant and child car seat buckles to require a minimum release force of 40 Newtons, or about 9 lbs. This force is higher than most activities of daily living, and requires the “red button” to be pushed only using the thumb. For anyone with thumb pain or weakness, including arthritis, carpal tunnel, De Quervains, etc. this creates quite a challenge. UnbuckleMe is designed to be used in various ways, depending on what is most comfortable. Although leverage reduces the force and minimizes strain on the thumb, UnbuckleMe can be used without using your thumbs at all! This method shifts the force entirely to larger joints and muscles in the hand.

Unbuckle Me has been tested across a range of car seats and push-button buckle shapes, including Graco, Chicco, Britax, Clek, UPPAbaby, Nuna, Recaro, Diono, Maxi-Cosi, Cosco, Evenflo, and many others. The top handle is covered with a softer, “grippy” material to provide greater comfort and stability. The tool is made from a lightweight plastic material that is BPA free and tested to withstand very high/low temperatures.
