Arthritis with its symptoms of swelling, fever, inflammation, stiffness, and pain, can make everyday living and activities uncomfortable at best. There are ways however, to minimize or alleviate the discomforts of this condition and we are going to share some of these with you.

Foods and Arthritis

Although dietary changes are not a cure for arthritis, there are certain foods that help reduce inflammation, strengthen the bones, and support the immune system, easing the effects of this condition.

Strawberries contain immune boosting antioxidants that help fight against inflammation in the body. Certain types of fish including: salmon, tuna, mackerel, and herring, contain another anti-inflammatory in the form of Omega-3. Omega-3 can also be found in soybeans such as tofu and edamame, for those allergic to or not a fan of seafood.

Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) has anti-inflammatory properties that are like those found in non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Cooking with and/or using EVOO in side dishes such as pasta and salads may help reduce swelling in the joints. Milk, yogurt, and cheese are three low-fat dairy products that contain Vitamin D and Calcium. Both Vitamin D and Calcium help strengthen the bones and Vitamin D helps improve the immune system, which is wonderful for those with osteoarthritis (www.arthritis.org).

Exercise decreases joint pain while increasing strength and flexibility. Popular arthritis relief workouts include yoga, swimming, and the simple act of walking.
